Buffalo River Fest to Welcome Alan Smithwick, Commercial & Brand Ambassador for Sullivan’s Brewing Co.
Alan Smithwick, Commercial and Brand Ambassador for Sullivan’s Brewing Company, will be available to meet and greet beer aficionado’s at the 17th Annual Buffalo River Fest. He will be at the beer tent starting at 6pm on Friday night, at 3pm on Saturday, and at Noon on Sunday. The award winning Malting’s Red Ale by Sullivan’s will be on tap as well.
With his vast experience, knowledge and connections within the beverage industry, Alan Smithwick also brings the inherent credibility of direct lineage to two of Ireland’s best-known brewing dynasties – the Smithwicks and the Sullivans. A great, great grandson of Ireland’s best-known statesman, Daniel O’Connell MP (The Liberator), Alan is also a direct descendant of the founders of each brewing company, both established in the early 18th century and has been the director of Smithwick’s Cash & Carry Kilkenny for the past 25 years.
The Smithwick and Sullivan families were business competitors, but being neighbors in Kilkenny, connected socially, through politics and via marriage, they share an interesting history, not least the tale of how Smithwicks came to acquire their biggest rival. When errant member of the Sullivan family bet and lost the entire business on a horse race in 1918, to the demise of the Sullivan’s business, Smithwick’s subsequently rescued the workforce and subsumed operations into their own brewery, in turn retaining the rights to the Sullivan’s brand name.
Alan Smithwick brings both families together again in the modern incarnation of the Sullivan’s Brewing Company, the combined provenance of some six hundred years of continuous brewing in Ireland. With such a unique passport into the world of brewing, it’s hardly surprising that Sullivan’s Brewing Company recently won the accolade as brewers of the best ale in the world, beating over a thousand beers from 50 countries to win a Championship Keg trophy at the International Brewing Awards with its Malting’s Red Ale by Sullivan’s.
